Hearing scheduled for former AMA Chairman Dal SmiliePosted January 12, 2010
The jury trial for former American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) Board of Directors Chairman Dal Smilie, previously scheduled for Jan. 12, has been continued and a new hearing time and date has been set for 2 p.m. on Feb. 22. Smilie faces felony charges in connection with evidence discovered by the AMA that the defendant submitted unsubstantiated expense reimbursement claims over a period of years. Smilie has entered a plea of not guilty in response to a Fairfield County grand jury indictment on charges of theft by deception and receiving stolen property in the matter, which involves more than $100,000. He is currently free on a $25,000 surety bond and a $10,000 recognizance bond. The grand jury case is a criminal action that comes after a civil case settled last year in which Mr. Smilie satisfied the Association’s claim. The criminal case is expected to continue through the Fairfield County Office of the Prosecuting Attorney. The AMA will continue to update our members as information becomes public.
