Off-road activist and volunteer Harold Soens, 1939-2006

A popular and active champion of the off-road riding community and active AMA volunteer, Harold Soens, died recently of a heart attack at his home in Santee, California. He was 66.

Soens was an AMA Life Member and served the Association in numerous roles: delegate to AMA Congress, co-founder of the AMA Community Council of San Diego, District 38 legislative officer, and volunteer Field Rep, among others.

He was also president of the San Diego Off-Road Coalition and volunteered in a number of other roles.

"I'll always remember Harold for his enthusiasm and his incredible energy," said Edward Moreland, AMA Vice President for Government Relations. "He was always giving his time, always willing to work, and always standing up for what he believed was right."

Soens was passionate about off-road recreation and often worked with children educating them about the sport and teaching them responsible use. He volunteered thousands of hours working at Ocotillo Wells State Vehicular Recreation Area, attending meetings, helping the California Police Activities League, working as a representative for the National Off-Highway Vehicle Conservation Council, serving as president of both the California League of Off-Road Voters and the San Diego Off-Road Coalition and being a member of the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area Technical Review Team.

"I served with Harold on a number of committees and always enjoyed his enthusiasm and friendship," said Don Amador, western representative for the BlueRibbon Coalition. "He was a stand-up guy and will be missed by all who knew him."
