AMA West Youth Hare Scrambles Championship Series race reports

Round 5, Shasta Lake, California
April 12-13, 2008

The 2008 Round 5-AMA Western Hare Scrambles Championship Series and Round 4-AMA Western Youth Hare Scrambles Championship Series events were held April 12th and 13th, 2008 at the Shasta Dam OHV Area in Shasta Lake, CA. The weather was sunny with temperatures in the low 80's. We had over 600 racers turn out this year, exceeding our average of just under 500. We added some new trails this year, the long course was approximately 20 miles. The courses varied from technical single-track, rocky and challenging hill sections to loamy dirt through dense trees with fire road connectors. The beauty of this OHV/camping area made our event even that much better!

Overall winners in the AMA Western Youth Hare Scrambles Championship Series Round 4 were: 1st place: Anson Maloney, 2nd place: Kale Elworthy and 3rd place: Alex Dorsey.

Round 3, March 29, 2008
Emmett, Idaho

Round 3 podium

A brief rain/snow storm the evening before the race made for excellent racing conditions. The first race of the day was the 50cc class, which lasted an hour, forcing all racers to make a pit stop while circling the one-mile race course. Logan Rogers of Emmett, Idaho, dominated the race, lapping up to second place aboard a LEM. Dante Oliveira from Hollister, California, finished second on a Cobra, while Tyler Ellena of Napa, California, rounded out the podium in third on a KTM.

Next up was the 65cc and 85cc Junior classes, which ran for one hour and 30 minutes around the six-mile course. When it was all over, Timothy Winslow on a KTM was standing high on the podium with fellow racers Travis Nealon from Hollister, California, on a Kawasaki in second and fellow Kawasaki racer, Ty Baker, rounding out the podium in third. Bailey Kouba on his KX took the 65cc class win and finished 4th overall, beating many in the 85cc class. Lee Price from Nyssa, Oregon, took second on a KTM, while 50cc class winner Logan Rogers took third.

Then the Supermini, 85cc, and girl’s classes fired their bikes up for the final race of the day. When the green flag dropped, they raced towards the pit area, down the extremely fast sand wash, circled the pits and headed out on the race course for an 11-lap, two-hour race. The race was close for the opening laps between Anson Maloney, Alex Dorsey and Austin Kouba. Maloney and Dorsey battled for several successive laps with Kouba hanging with them in third. Then Maloney pulled ahead, tearing up the race course in a dominating fashion and took the win decisively. Dorsey and Kouba, both aboard Hondas, rounded out the podium in second and third, respectively.

The Salinas Ramblers hosted the Picacho Creek Challenge, round 1 of the AMA West Youth Hare Scrambles Championship Series on February 9. While this was the third year for the Picacho Creek Challenge, it was the first year it was held as a Championship Series.

Although 3 inches of rain and snow fell the previous weekend, Mother Nature decided to be nice this year and the event was epic, with the temperature in the 72-degree range, making conditions perfect.

Riders were treated to a fun and challenging course. Anson Maloney from Cedar Ridge, California, took the lead early on and held it through the entire race, winning the overall.
