AMA/FMF National Hare & Hound Series race reportsRound 7
Destry Abbott was within striking distance for the first loop, but yielded second to David Pearson. David Pearson charged towards the leading Yamaha until his KTM ran out of coolant due to a punctured radiator. He then became a spectator near the end of the second loop and watched Destry pass back into second place on his Kawasaki. Destry picked up where David Pearson left off, chasing Russ to the finish line. National Pro rider David Kamo had a terrific ride as he kept KTM on the podium in third place. Local rider Nick Burson was mixing it up with the national riders today and picked up a fifth place in the 120-mile event. Although the day’s race did not turn out as he hoped, KTM’s David Pearson returned to the podium to accept the 2007 AMA/FMF National Hare & Hound Championship #1 plate as season champion. Round 5 Team Green's Destry Abbott kept his title hopes alive with a win at the AMA/FMF National Hare & Hound Championship Series in Lucerne Valley, California on April 29.
Leaving the pits, David Pearson held a 30-second lead on Abbott, with Russell Pearson in third, Quinn Cody fourth, and David Kamo in fifth. Abbott worked his way into a passing position on the second loop and passed David on an off-camber rocky section for the lead. Pearson tried to get him back but ran out of fuel a few miles from the finish. With Abbott cruising to a victory, Russell Pearson passed David for second place with David finishing third. Kamo and Cody finished fourth and fifth. Round 4
Destry Abbott had the lead as the race headed into the dunes, but he wandered off the race course. Dave Pearson was the first to find his way back on the course and took the lead. Pearson held the lead through the second loop, as the dust kept everyone in line. The finish order was Pearson first, Abbott second, and Quinn Cody in third. Round 3
Pearson bested a field of 202 riders to win the title. Pearson follows in the footsteps of motorcycle greats like Marty Smith, Danny Hamill and local rider Craig Smith. Following Pearson into the winner’s circle was last year’s winner, Kawasaki rider Destry Abbott. Honda’s Kendall Norman was third. Wayne Matlock won the Quad class. Mark Spaeth and Josh Row took second and third respectively. Round 2
David Pearson of Las Vegas took the checkered flag at the Four Aces MC Moose Run, Round 2 of the AMA/FMF National Hare & Hound series aboard a KTM 525. Pearson finished about 30 seconds ahead of Kawasaki-mounted defending National Champion Destry Abbott of Peoria, Arizona. Carl Maassberg of St. George, Utah finished third on his Yamaha 450. The early race leader was Maassberg, who led through the first checkpoint. By the time they came through the second checkpoint at about mile 20, Pearson had passed Maassberg, and by the third checkpoint at mile 32, Abbott had also passed Maassberg and moved into second place. David Pearson came out of the pit stop at mile 40 in first place, with Abbott right behind him. Maassberg and Russell Pearson were about 30 seconds back. Round 1 winner Russell Pearson would break down and leave the race shortly after his pit stop. Abbott was finally able to pass David Pearson on the second loop, but it was short-lived as a small crash broke his front brake lever, slowing him down just a bit for the remainder of the event. Quinn Cody of Los Olivos, California and David Kamo of New Plymouth, Idaho rounded out the top 5. Round 1
Kendal Norman, on a Honda, was first to the bomb and led the first loop. Kendal entered the pits first, followed by Russ Pearson (above), on a Yamaha, and David Pearson, on a KTM. Early in the second loop, Kendal bobbled and was passed on the left and the right by both Pearsons. David Pearson soon after was able to get around Russ Pearson and lead the race. Shortly thereafter, David blew a turn and Russ was able to take back the lead, which he never relinquished. Russ also led the third and final loop and finished approximately 5 minutes ahead of second-place David. Kendal Norman finished third overall. © 2007, American Motorcyclist Association |
