Caselli leads U.S. Junior Trophy to top finish on first day of ISDEStory and photos by Steve Berkner Kurt Caselli's eighth-place overall finish helped put the U.S. team in second place in the Junior Trophy Team division during Day One of the 81st International Maxxis Six Days Enduro in Taupo, New Zealand.
The strong U.S. Junior team, consisting of Caselli (KTM), Ricky Dietrick (Kaw), Russell Bobbitt (KTM) and David Pearson (KTM), placed just 16.07 seconds behind France's score of 2:19.18. Finishing 55.81 seconds behind the United States was Australia with a score of 3:14.09. The Junior Trophy Division is limited to riders age 23 and under. Meanwhile, the U.S. World Trophy Team finished the day in 14th place overall. Finland's Juha Salminen finished second in the individual standings to lead the Finnish team to a first-place finish in the team standings. France and Spain were second and third overall in unofficial standings. Jimmy Jarrett was the top-finishing U.S. Trophy Team rider. Team USA manager Bruce Wakeley called the day a success, with all 40 American riders on the two trophy teams and the 10 club teams finishing the day without losing a single trail point. "Getting 40 riders through the day without any real problems is a big accomplishment," Wakeley said. "I've been involved in the Team USA effort for 17 years and I can not remember a better day for Team USA." In the three-rider Club Team division, Motoklub Jiretin Topservis had the best day with a score of 4:29.34. Trail Riders of Houston, the top U.S. club team, consisting of Cole Kirkpatrick (KTM), David Kamo (KTM) and Luke McNeil (Yam), finished the day in 6th place with a score of 9:26.24. The GoFasters.com club team of Patrick Garrahan (KTM), Brian Sperle (KTM) and Daniel Janus (Gas) were in 8th place with a score of 10:06.96. Day One riding conditions were perfect with dry trails and plenty of fresh single-track, but rain was predicted for Day Two. For complete results, visit the official ISDE website.
