Both riders were aboard Suzuki SV650s. John Lord of Brunswick, Ohio, also aboard an SV650, rounded out the top three just about three seconds behind the winner.

Also in that race, Nick Cummings of Mt. Morris, Michigan, and Logan Myers of Wheeler, Michigan, faced off on the Mid-Ohio road course for the first time aboard identical Honda RS125s. The two 15-year-olds shared the AMA dirt-track Horizon Award just a couple weeks ago.

In the road-race, Cummings finished about nine seconds behind Lord to take 4th spot, and Myers finished 5th, some eight seconds behind Cummings.

That was just some of the racing action on the opening day of the two-day Grand Championships. Races were held for several classes, but the premier races will be tomorrow and finishes in those races will determine this year's AMA road-race Horizon Award winner.

Another race set for tomorrow is the Suzuki World GSXR Cup. Those bikes are limited to a maximum 135 horsepower and Dusty Schaller staffs the dyno to keep everyone honest.

"We're the horsepower police," he says with a smile.
